Both health professionals and parents and carers of children and young people with a disability recognise the importance of overnight respite care. Within the NDIS, overnight respite is also known as short term accommodation and has many benefits for both children and their carers.
In late 2019, we opened Xavier Place in the Brisbane suburb of Yeerongpilly. A purpose built, newly renovated home-away-from-home for respite care and support. We have been welcoming guests throughout 2020, following the guidelines and directives issued by Queensland Health to help keep our guests, their families and our staff safe.
We asked some of the families who use Xavier Place for respite, how it supports their child and their family.
“My son so looks forward to staying at Xavier Place. I think he gets sick of me! But seriously though it’s so good for him, he’s a teenager so it’s natural that he should want a little bit of independence away from mum and dad and Xavier Place and their amazing team make that possible.” - Mum
“I think respite care is so important when caring for a young person with complex needs. It helps me to take some “me” time and also to spend time with my other children doing things that they love doing. And of course my son loves it so everyone is happy.” - Dad
“The staff at Xavier Place are wonderful. I feel so comfortable that they will take excellent care of our teenage daughter and meet her high support needs.” - Mum
“Life as a single parent of a child with a complex disability can be exhausting at times. Respite is an opportunity for me to re-charge. And my son just loves staying at Xavier Place, it’s a real highlight for him.” – Mum
