Since opening in 2019, Xavier Place has been a bright and welcoming space for children and young people. Over the years, it has become even more — a home made unique by the voices, creativity and individuality of the guests who stay here.

“With the children’s artworks and creations, Xavier Place has become not just a house but a home,” says Charlie, Xavier’s Art Therapist. “Through art, we have created a space that reflects the unique personalities, passions and energy of our guests.”

Today, themed bedrooms proudly showcase our guests’ creations, from paintings in the “skateboard room” to vibrant works in the “beach room”. Each piece adds character and personality, turning walls into stories and making every corner of the home feel special.

Art therapy sessions are tailored so every child can contribute, to the latest creation, no matter their ability. “If a guest can’t hold a paintbrush up to a canvas, we’ll create smaller artworks together,” Charlie explains. “These pieces are then collaged into something bigger. Each collage reflects individual identity, while also celebrating the friendships and connections formed at Xavier Place.”

That sense of connection is something the children and young people feel deeply. Standing in front of the Xavier Place portrait wall, Joel exclaimed, “All my friends are on the wall!”

Importantly, the direction and ideas for artworks come from the guests themselves. “Joel suggested the addition of planes to a group collage, others want to add birds or animals and that’s the fun part!” Charlie says. “It’s about following their passions and bringing those interests to life in a shared space.”

For Sandra Daniels, General Manager Clinical Services, these contributions are at the heart of what makes Xavier Place special. “We deeply value the creativity and input of our children and young people,” she says. “Their artwork brings Xavier Place to life and makes it unique.”

Charlie has been an Art Therapist with Xavier for three years, and in that time, the walls of Xavier Place have become much more than decoration. They are a gallery of stories, passions and friendships — a vibrant reflection of the children and young people who call Xavier Place their home-away-from-home.
