NDIS Update and Impact for Children with Developmental Delay

Developmental delay is when a child experiences challenges with everyday tasks that other children their age can do, such as walking, talking, or dressing themselves. Children with developmental delay need extra help to do these tasks compared to other children their age. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has made changes to its early childhood approach that impact children with developmental delay, including:

  • Age range

The age range for the NDIS early childhood approach was expanded from children under 7 to children under 9, starting in July 2023. This change aligns with the World Health Organisation's definition of young children.

  • Eligibility

Children under 6 with developmental delay can access support through the NDIS early childhood approach without a diagnosis.

  • Access

Access to the NDIS will be based on a child's support needs, not their diagnosis.

  • Support

Support will be based on evidence about what works best for children.

  • Capacity building

The NDIS Price Guide will include a "capacity building support in natural settings" item to allow supports to be delivered at home or other natural settings.
